Newbury is braced for criticism at its flagship Coral Gold Cup meeting this month as it prepares for a winter wonderland-style Christmas carnival in the centre of the course that could obscure views of the racing.

Officials at the Berkshire track admit they have work to do following renewed criticism of that initiative alongside other issues raised by racegoers – including the lack of a big screen – at the season’s opening jumps card last Thursday.

The track’s premier jumps fixture, which used to be known as the Hennessy meeting, takes place on November 25 and 26 and will, for the first time, feature what is being promoted as the Great Christmas Carnival in the centre of the course.
