The National Horseracing College in Doncaster suffered "significant damage" to its stables after a fire broke out on Tuesday.

All the horses were safe and there were no reported injuries following the arrival of fire engines and support from members of staff.

According to a statement from the college's social media account, the incident was initiated as a result of power lines crossing the site, which led to trees and grass surrounding the site catching fire.

Colonel Stephen Padgett, chief executive of the NHC, said: "We've had better days, but it could have been worse.

"People are safe, horses are safe, but there is significant damage. It could have been worse, so we're grateful not only to the fire brigade but to the learners and staff because they have been marvellous.

"They all reacted in the best possible way you could have wished for. They were doing everything we wanted them to do when we wanted them to do it.

Padgett also added that all courses led by the college will continue, and said: "All of the efforts will be on the NHC's delivery as close to normal as possible, despite the fact we have essentially lost a barn."
