Naas to subsidise stable staff canteen and upgrade interior

Naas has agreed to subsidise its grooms' canteen by 50 per cent, starting on Sunday for Royal Ascot trials day, and has also announced plans to extend and upgrade the interior of the canteen.

These developments will take place in the second phase of the overall €3.2 million Naas redevelopment, which is due to happen in the coming months. The first phase was completed in January, with the opening of the new feature building, The Circle.

Tom Ryan, general manager, said: "We've heavily invested in our facilities and continue to enhance the experience at Naas. Facilities for racegoers and owners and trainers have improved; now it’s time we reward the stable staff for their hard work and dedication."

Bernard Caldwell, chairman of the Irish Stable Staff Association, said: "The ISSA are thrilled to hear Naas has put its best foot forward and will subsidise the grooms' canteen by 50 per cent. On behalf of the association I would like to extend a huge thank you to the management and directors at Naas."

Jockey Mark Enright recently shared on Twitter his frustration about the cost of a sandwich and cup of tea at Kilbeggan.

He tweeted: "€5 for a bad sandwich and cup of tea in @KilbegganRaces today I’ll keep tweeting if ye keep charging."

It came shortly after his tweet about a bag of Tayto crisps costing €2 at the midlands course drew the attention of Horse Racing Ireland chief executive Brian Kavanagh.
