Angela Ellis, who was a champion point-to-point rider at 15, the breeder of a Classic winner and a former raceday steward, could well be in a unique position after revealing she was trackside for both the first and last winners Queen Elizabeth II celebrated as an owner.

The 90-year-old from West Sussex can recall the day Monaveen became the Queen's first winning racehorse when the United Kingdom's longest-serving monarch was still Princess Elizabeth, at Fontwell in 1949, and Ellis was also at another of her local tracks, Goodwood, 73 years later when Love Affairs carried Her Majesty's colours to victory two days before her death on September 8.

The then princess owned Monaveen jointly with her mother when he scored over fences in October 1949. Trained by Peter Cazalet, Monaveen went on to win the Queen Elizabeth Chase at Hurst Park that December, a race almost as valuable as the same season's Gold Cup and Champion Hurdle, and the best race the Queen won as an owner over jumps.
