Meehan avoids surgery on leg broken in freak accident

Jockey Chris Meehan, who suffered a series of freak injuries in Italy this month culminating in an ambulance running over and breaking his right leg, is recovering well.

Meehan suffered a fall in a hurdle race at Merano and was further injured by the ambulance coming to his aid after his horse had kicked him in the face, leaving him with a broken nose and a cut in his jaw requiring 27 stitches.

His incredible story was shared by tens of thousands of people around the world and the rider, who is eyeing a return to jump racing in Britain, gained plaudits for his positive attitude and good humour.
