Magnificent Motivator pummels rivals to establish Classic claims

In the lead-up to Saturday's Racing Post Trophy, we look back at some of the race's best winners, starting with subsequent Derby scorer Motivator's triumph in 2004.

Aidan O'Brien saddled a Beresford Stakes winner, Mark Johnston was represented by his Acomb Stakes scorer, while Mick Channon ran a horse who had finished within three-quarters of a length of the exciting Dubawi, but the market only wanted to know one horse: Motivator.

The Michael Bell-trained colt was fast-tracked straight to Group 1 company on the back of an impressive six-length debut win at Newmarket. Despite facing rivals with greater experience - and stronger form - Motivator attracted some hefty wagers at Doncaster and was sent off the 6-4 favourite.
