Laura Barry to be remembered at York charity ball on Saturday
A charity ball in memory of apprentice jockey Laura Barry will take place at York racecourse on Saturday.
The event, which is supported by her friends and family, will raise money for three charities that helped Barry during her illness – Macmillan Cancer Support, the Injured Jockeys Fund and Sarcoma UK.
Bertie Hayton, a close friend of Barry’s and an organiser of the ball, said: “The support for this has been absolutely unreal. We have raised more than £10,000 for the event so far and it's looking like we could reach £15,000.”
Barry lost her battle with cancer in July at the age of 25, just a day before her wedding to Ben Hamilton, brother of jockey Tony, was due to take place.
Hayton added: “The Injured Jockeys Fund, Macmillan and Sarcoma all did so much to help Laura, so we want to help these wonderful charities in return.”
Barry partnered 18 winners from 193 rides in a career spanning four years from 2010 to 2014. If you would like to donate, please contact Hayton at bertie.hayton@gmail.com.
