Hot prospect Sangarius will bid to enhance his Classic claims in a red-hot edition of the Darley Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket on October 13, when he could potentially clash with Too Darn Hot, Quorto and Advertise in a race that will go along way to establishing the pecking order among a sparkling crop of juveniles.

Possible targets

Too Darn Hot, Quorto, Anthony Van Dyck, Advertise Darley Dewhurst Stakes, Newmarket, October 13

Ten Sovereigns, Advertise Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes, Newmarket, September 29

Calyx Out until next season

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Sangarius took his unbeaten record to two when putting the Listed Flying Scotsman Stakes to bed with a flourish at Doncaster on Friday, earning quotes of 10-1 for next season's 2,000 Guineas.

The Group 1 Dewhurst – in which the leading juvenile performance of the season is often posted – represents a significant jump in class, but connections feel Sangarius warrants his place in the line-up.

Watch Sangarius win the Flying Scotsman Stakes

Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner Prince Khalid Abdullah, said: "He is a fine, scopey horse but is still a work in progress. He needs to improve upon what he achieved in the Flying Scotsman to be competitive in the Dewhurst but we do feel that he deserves to take his chance."

Sangarius, who is 13-2 third favourite in a market headed by Champagne Stakes winner Too Darn Hot, is a son of Juddmonte first-season sire Kingman, who is also responsible for Coventry Stakes winner Calyx.

Issuing a positive bulletin on Calyx, who has been sidelined since that impressive Royal Ascot success, Grimthorpe said: "Kingman's first Group winner was, of course, Calyx, who has been out injured since he won the Coventry Stakes, but the good news is that Calyx is on the way back – he is no lost cause and I’m hopeful of his prospects for next season.

"Nevertheless, his injury was a real blow, and even the emergence of Sangarius has not really softened it."

Dewhurst betting (top prices): 2-1 Too Darn Hot, 11-4 Quorto, 13-2 Sangarius, 8-1 Ten Sovereigns, 10-1 Advertise, 10-1 Anthony Van Dyck, 16-1 bar
