The six dark horses you need to look out for at Glorious Goodwood

Gussy Mac

July Cup-winning trainer Roger Teal is having a season to remember, but the impressive Oxted is not the only horse in his yard who has a rapidly growing reputation.

Now based where Nicky Henderson started his wonderful career, the capable Teal could seek more Group-race glory in Thursday's Qatar Richmond Stakes with Gussy Mac, who is two from three and looks progressive.

He may still be underrated against some Mark Johnston and Aidan O'Brien-trained runners, despite a Listed win last time.

Tilsit

Charlie Hills's week will likely revolve around how the rocket Battaash fares in the King George Qatar Stakes on Friday, but the promising Tilsit might be worth keeping an eye on in the Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes on Friday.

He went close on his debut at Newcastle in June and made no mistake when following up at the track next time, bolting up by 19 lengths – a performance the handicapper thought was worth a mark of 98.

Lightly raced, this Kingman relative is open to loads of improvement.

Bell Rock

Owners Jim and Fitri Hay are not based far from Goodwood and adore winners at the Glorious meeting, so perhaps give Bell Rock a second glance in the Unibet You're On Handicap on Tuesday.

Trained by Andrew Balding, the four-year-old has always been well regarded and won at Newmarket in commanding fashion before a fine sixth in the Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot.

Repeating those efforts should give him solid claims for connections of 2017 Sussex Stakes hero Here Comes When.

Glorious Journey

The strength of the 7f division is often forgotten with no Group 1 race over that distance for any horse older than three in Britain, but Glorious Journey is exactly the horse to thrive over the trip. He can establish his dominance of the division in Tuesday's Qatar Lennox Stakes.

The Charlie Appleby-trained runner stayed on well to land the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes at Newbury last season and has shaped with lots of promise in two runs at Meydan and Riyadh earlier this year. Conditions should be ideal and he's one to keep onside.

Steel Bull

Steel Bull looked a smart juvenile in the making with his blistering debut victory for Michael O'Callaghan at Naas last week. He powered away for a convincing win from a prominent position and is entered in Wednesday's Markel Insurance Molecomb Stakes.

That Group 3 event looks a deep contest between top sprinting prospects but Steel Bull deserves his place and is the most unexposed runner in the line-up.

Queen Power

The Qatar Nassau Stakes is hotting up to be a real top quality event between proven Group 1 performers but it's worth remembering Queen Power – who has always looked capable of reaching that grade.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained four-year-old has ran well in defeat in two starts this season, finishing second to Terebellum and then a good third at Royal Ascot. Those outings were packed full of promise but she seems the type who may thrive in a better calibre of race. The unique Goodwood test may also play to her strengths.
