One trainer, one jockey, one horse and one race to watch on a super Saturday

One trainer

John Gosden is no stranger to having big chances at big meetings but it could be a particularly good day for the trainer, who will be represented by up to 11 runners at Newmarket and Ascot.

He will send out Seventh Kingdom in the Group 2 bet365 Superlative Stakes (3.00) at Newmarket and the son of Frankel, who won his only start at Doncaster last month, is prominent in the market.

Saturday cards

Gosden is represented in the big race at Ascot, the Group 2 Betfred Summer Mile Stakes (3.15), with the lightly-raced Lord Tennyson, a Listed runner-up earlier last month.

One jockey

Godolphin are well represented at Newmarket and retained jockey William Buick has six promising rides.

Eastern World (1.50) could be the pick of his mounts with the three-year-old making his first start in handicap company for Charlie Appleby after running out a two-length winner of a maiden on the Rowley Mile course last time.

Buick also appears to have a good chance in the Superlative Stakes, a race he won on Quorto in 2018, aboard Master Of The Seas, who won his debut at Newmarket under Brett Doyle.

One race

In this truncated season the Darley July Cup (3.35) represents the first top-level clash between the Classic generation and their elders.

It looks set to be the battle we all wanted with Commonwealth Cup winner Golden Horde, the latest to emerge from the Clive Cox sprinter squad, taking on Diamond Jubilee winner Hello Youmzain.

Sceptical and Khaadem finished third and fourth behind Hello Youmzain but will bid to reverse that form, while the St James’s Palace Stakes (Threat) and King’s Stand Stakes (Equilateral) form lines are also represented.

And then there are those who missed out on Royal Ascot, like the rapidly improving Palace House Stakes winner Oxted and German raider Namos. It is a wonderful centrepiece to a busy day.

One horse

Jim Crowley had an exceptional week at Royal Ascot but one ride he would probably want back is Mohaather, who cruised through the Queen Anne Stakes only to find no path through the field.

He finished seventh in a race run at a crawl but the Marcus Tregoning-trained four-year-old can be marked up for that effort and could make amends in the Betfred Summer Mile Stakes (3.15), which is on the round course at Ascot rather than the straight mile.

The round mile can also have its hazards, but Dane O’Neill, taking over from the Newmarket-bound Crowley, will be aware of them and will hope Mohaather can tank through the Group 2 with the same zest as his last run. After just six races, last year’s Greenham Stakes winner remains one to get excited about.
