Group 1 winner Teona has been retired after sustaining an injury during training, trainer Roger Varian has revealed.

Owned by Ali Saeed, Teona gained her biggest win when defeating Snowfall in last year's Prix Vermeille before going on to finish third in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Del Mar.

"It has been a huge pleasure to train Teona for owner Ali Saeed and I would like to thank him for giving me the opportunity to train her," Varian told his website. "It was a great thrill being able to win a Group 1 with her, having also won a Group 1 with her mother Ambivalent."

Teona had not raced since last year, but held entries in the Group 1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Qipco Stakes and the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

SIS and The Racing Partnership agree settlement over significant damages claim

Rival betting-shop service providers SIS and The Racing Partnership have agreed a settlement over a damages claim of up to £40 million against the former.

The case reached the Court of Appeal in October 2020, when Arena Racing Company (Arc), the driving force behind TRP, claimed success in the long-running legal battle. Both sides were given leave to appeal at that juncture.

In May the previous year, a high court judge found SIS had unlawfully breached confidentiality in raceday data belonging to Arc, in a case stretching back to the full launch of TRP in 2017.

Agreement was revealed in a statement issued on behalf of SIS, which read: “SIS and TRP have settled their litigation and both parties are pleased the dispute has been resolved amicably. The terms of settlement are confidential.”

A number of bookmakers who had not signed up with the new provider received an unofficial service supplied by SIS from data derived from the Tote’s on-course presence, prompting legal action from TRP.

SIS, which has been supplying data and pictures since 1987, had previously successfully defended two other claims made against it, that there had been a conspiracy to drive down the value of TRP’s media rights and that there had been an infringement of copyright and database rights in terms of betting shows and prices.

In the Court of Appeal judgement close to two years ago, TRP succeeded in overturning the original judge’s decision that SIS was not liable for an unlawful means conspiracy, while SIS’s appeal in relation to breach of confidentiality was upheld.

Newland yard gets all-clear following outbreak of equine herpes

Grand National-winning trainer Richard Newland could have his first runners in more than three weeks at Worcester on Monday after the BHA confirmed the trainer's yard had been passed free of the contagious equine herpes virus (EHV).

An outbreak of EHV at Newland's Droitwich stable had been reported on June 8 but following stringent biosecurity and disease testing measures, the stable was handed the go-ahead to commence a phased reopening on Tuesday.

The yard will continue to be monitored, with biosecurity to remain in place until all clearance testing is completed. Newland has made five entries at Worcester's jumps meeting on Monday.
