Chester Williams in intensive care following schooling accident

Jockey Chester Williams is in a Plymouth hospital's intensive care unit after being injured in a fall on Tuesday at his family's Culverhill Farm racing stables in north Devon.

Williams has ridden 64 British jumps winners over the last seven seasons, 38 of them for his mother Jane, with whom he is due to become a joint-trainer next month.

The 25-year-old, who finished fourth in a Uttoxeter maiden hurdle on his most recent ride seven days ago, recently described the opportunity to share the training licence with his mother as "a privilege".

Speaking on Wednesday morning, Jane Williams said: "Chester had a schooling accident at 9am yesterday and was then airlifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. There are no broken bones but he is in intensive care, where he is stable and comfortable.

"People will want to know because people care but there obviously can't be any visitors at the moment."

Williams told the Racing Post this month that her son had been invaluable since her split with partner and former licence-holder, Nick Williams, who last season trained independently from Culverhill Farm.

Williams said then: "At one time last year I was depressed, struggling and trying to raise all this money for Nick; Chester took it upon himself to sell a horse [Monsieur Lecoq] on Twitter. He's got a modern approach.

"If Chester hadn't been interested I definitely wouldn't have kept training. I don't want to be in business on my own."

Chester Williams has enjoyed his biggest wins as a rider aboard Monsieur Lecoq in the 2019 Welsh Champion Hurdle at Ffos Las and Balko Saint – also trained by his mother – in a novice hurdle at Kempton last October.
