Katie Walsh failed in her bid to win the Australian Grand National at Ballarat on Sunday when her mount I’ll’ava’alf was brought down at the final fence when out of contention.

Walsh, who was also brought down on Fledged earlier on the card, was bidding to emulate the achievement of her brother Ruby, who won the race last season on Bashboy.

"That's horseracing," Walsh said. "I was unlucky on Fledged. He half stepped into it and landed on top of the horse in front of him and I came off.
