'This Derby entry ran a debut race full of promise' - last week's tracker horses

With our expert race readers watching – and writing a descriptive in-running comment for – every horse who runs in Britain and Ireland, there are three different categories used to denote those who are most appealing with the future in mind.

Did well in the circumstances

Kyber Crystal
Second, Ffos Las, September 26

Enjoys this ground, so it was no surprise to see her go well. However, she made life difficult with a slow start and was poorly positioned and short of room when the race developed. She finished strongly and is one to bear in mind for something similar.

Baltimore Boy
Second, Ascot, September 30

Resumed progress on turf debut, arguably shaping best considering the amount of ground he made up on the winner from two furlongs out. He might be able to defy his mark before the end of the turf season and he should do better still as a four-year-old.

Prairie Falcon
Ninth, Newmarket, October 1

A winner of nurseries off marks of 74 and 76, including at Ayr 15 days earlier, he likely faced an impossible task given he plotted a route furthest from the favoured near-side rail.

Fourth, Ascot, October 1

Ran well as he did best of those racing more towards the near side of the bunch, and that despite having to fight for racing room inside the final two furlongs. He finished nicely.

Eyecatcher

Captain Sedgewick
Third, Ffos Las, September 26

Was beaten a long way by the winner, but she's worth upgrading given she was short of room for much of the final two furlongs in first-time cheekpieces and motored home once in the clear. She's not won in over three years but has potential off this reduced mark.

Facethepuckout
Third, Cork, September 27

Attracted significant market support on his first run back for this yard. However, he gave himself a tough task with a tardy start and was still last at the head of the straight. He had to weave his way through and did well to finish so close. He can make amends.

Come Together
Sixth, Salisbury, September 29

Already gelded, he was a real eyecatcher, staying on late from the rear after having been messed about at the start and showing signs of greenness. A 62,000 gns half-brother to six winners including Baccarat (6f-7f), Precieuse (6f-1m including French 1,000 Guineas) and Peut Etre, he looks worth keeping onside.

Escape Free
Third, Lingfield, September 29

Was an eyecatcher on debut and improved her initial Racing Post Rating on her second run. She was forced a little wide turning in and stayed on under a hand ride once her chance had gone. She gets a mark now and should improve for a step back up in trip.

Candleford
Third, Ascot, October 1

A stablemate of the winner, he has progressed through handicaps and showed he deserves his place in Pattern company now. He made his ground up stealthily from off the pace before keeping on to grab a place. He handled the ground but his turf wins have come on good to firm so there could be even better to come next year back on a sounder surface.

Prince Of Zenda
Third, Wolverhampton, October 1

The only debutant in the field shaped with considerable encouragement in third, albeit he hung continually left up the straight under pressure. A 75,000 gns foal prior to fetching double that as a yearling, he's closely related to the talented but quirky 5f-6f winner Swindler.

Promising

Second, Salisbury, September 29

Cost 425,000 gns as a yearling and is out of a 1m5f winner. This Derby entry ran a debut race full of promise and is a winner waiting to happen for his leading connections. He'll likely be well suited by middle distances next year and is open to a good deal of improvement.

Brief Times
Second, Warwick, September 29

Absent since being touched off over hurdles from this mark at Newcastle in April, but ran a fine race on his chasing debut, minus the hood, with the vastly more experienced winner only stamping his authority from the final fence. His jumping was fluent and he should have no problem winning something similar.
