Lansky looks another star for Phoenix Thoroughbreds

Gerald Mosse's retainer with the fledgling Phoenix Thoroughbreds Limited soon yielded dividends, and Windsor novice winner Lansky might be the best of the four juveniles to run for them so far – and they include Albany Stakes third Take Me With You.

As a 300,000gns breeze-up purchase, the imposing Dark Angel colt looked an obvious one for a winning debut but Jeremy Noseda, who trains all of the Phoenix runners, was far from certain he would be streetwise enough, which makes his neck defeat of Lingfield runner-up Jupiter, all the more meritorious.

International star Mosse was making it two wins from two starts at Windsor, having earlier this year partnered the team's Gotti – named like Lansky after a notorious gangland figure – to victory.

Of Lansky, he said: "I was expecting something nice, but he broke a bit slow so I gave him a bit of pressure to get there in time to understand what we were going to ask him. Gradually we got there, then the one in front [Jupiter] kept going and looked hard to catch, but when I pressed him he answered like a nice horse. I think he will learn a lot from that."

Noseda has already made some fancy entries for Lansky, including in Doncaster's Champagne Stakes and the Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury, and while he describes him as "a work in progress", he clearly likes him.

He said: "He wasn't ready, but his talent has carried him there. He's an okay horse and hopefully he'll keep going the right way.

"He's talented. I came here thinking that mentally he needs to grow up, and while he might be the best horse in the race he might not put it together first time out.

"He didn't put it together but still won. Although he missed the break he made up his ground then ran a little green but still won."
