Kingston cruise notable for launching two careers

The Racing Post Trophy has often been the launching pad from which talented individuals have first served notice of their exceptional talent.

As good as 2013 winner Kingston Hill was – and he was very good indeed, finishing second in the following year's Derby before winning the St Leger back at Doncaster – the renewal he won in breathtaking fashion by four and a half lengths from a field stacked with Group horses like Johann Strauss, The Grey Gatsby and Snow Sky will forever be remembered for how it marked the emergence into the spotlight of another notable racing talent: Roger Varian.

Varian had taken over from Michael Jarvis in 2011 and had won Group and Grade 1s abroad, but Kingston Hill's romp was his first on home soil.
