Key action at York before Lockinge takes centre stage at Newbury
York's Dante meeting and the Al Shaqab Lockinge headline the bill this week, but there is plenty more going on . . .
A mixed bag, but a bright day with Sedgefield, Beverley and Wincanton followed by evening meetings at Chepstow, Southwell and Killarney.
It is the first day of York's season and the highlight is the return of Harry Angel, the world's best sprinter last year who is earmarked to run in the Group 2 Duke of York Clipper Logistics Stakes. There is also jump racing at Punchestown.
The Betfred Dante Stakes takes centre stage at York and is a key trial for the Investec Derby. Golden Horn in 2015 was the last horse to complete the double, while York's bill also features the Betfred Middleton Stakes and expect some potentially smart sorts to be involved at Newmarket later in the day.
The York show wraps up with the MansionBet Yorkshire Cup, while Newbury and Newmarket complete a trio of Group 1 tracks to host Flat racing. Just for good measure, Aintree, home of the world's most famous jumps race, stages a seven-race card.
Newbury has its time in the spotlight, hosting its only top-level Flat race, the Al Shaqab Lockinge, which is worth £350,000. A certain Frankel won it in 2012 and the market this time round is headed by the progressive Addeybb. Newmarket, for the third day in succession, also races, three contests from there joining four from Newbury in front of the ITV4 cameras.
