Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist retired to stud
Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist has been retired to stud following the setback that has ruled him out of the Breeders' Cup Classic.
The Doug O'Neill-trained son of Uncle Mo, who exits with a career record of eight wins from 11 starts, will join Darley's stallion roster at Jonabell Farm in Lexington, where he will stand at a fee of $40,000.
Last year's US champion two-year-old, Nyquist was unbeaten in his first eight starts, among them five at the top level including last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile and the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in May.
But he never won again, being beaten into third behind arch rival Exaggerator in the Preakness Stakes and then fourth to the same rival in the Haskell Invitational.
Nyquist, who carried the colours of Reddam Racing, was last week ruled out of the Breeders' Cup with what his trainer described as a “puffy ankle”.
