Innisfree Lad
Fourth, Warwick, Thursday

Leighton Aspell gave Book Of Gold a superb front-running ride, winding it up from the front to burn off his rivals.

Innisfree Lad was second best. He got his timing wrong early in the back straight and, as so often at Warwick, struggled to find his place again. A final mistake two out finished him off.

That was the second time in a row that Innisfree Lad had run as if a real test of stamina would suit. His half-brother Cyclop won the Lincolnshire National two years ago for the same yard and that is the sort of race which could see him in the most favourable light. [Keith Melrose]

Pipesmoker
Third, Cheltenham, Friday

This scopey son of Authorized was pitched into an extremely good novice hurdle at Cheltenham after just one start, when he finished second in a bumper that hasn't really worked out.

He ran exceptionally well, though, putting in a strong late burst to take third behind stablemate Chantry House despite being outpaced down the hill.

Staying trips will suit him and it won't be long before he gets off the mark. [Tom Collins]

Calevade
Second, Newcastle, Saturday

This three-year-old had shown very little on his six previous outings but caught the eye with a power-packed finish over 1m4½f.

He looked to be going nowhere until he found his stride in the final furlong and would have won in another two strides.

He is rated only 48 and is now 0-7 in his career but is sure to have staying races in him at Newcastle, where trainer Ben Haslam has such an impressive record. [Tom Collins]

Not That Fuisse
Sixth, Cheltenham, Saturday

The Caspian Caviar Gold Cup was an eventful race. The Dan Skelton yard was narrowly denied the win with Spiritofthegames but their revenge, if it is to come, is as likely through sixth-placed Not That Fuisse.

He had been more or less campaigned at a big handicap, running creditably in non-Class 1 novices against smarter horses to protect a lenient starting mark. For a long way on Saturday, it looked like a plan well made, but it ultimately went awry.

It might have been stamina in the testing conditions or the fact he went wide most of the way round. Either way, having jumped better than in novices, Not That Fuisse might now be ready for that big handicap win. [Keith Melrose]
