Kavanagh describes meeting with Down Royal owner as 'very positive'

A meeting on Wednesday between Horse Racing Ireland and the Merrion Property Group, owner of Down Royal, regarding plans for the future of the racecourse was described by HRI chief executive Brian Kavanagh as “very positive”.

The Dublin-based Merrion Group, owned by Mike Roden, will take over the running of the course when the Down Royal Corporation of Horse Breeders’ lease expires at the end of December, and there has been much speculation as to what the future holds for the track.

Kavanagh said: “We met with Mike Roden and the Merrion Property Group today. It was a good meeting, a very positive one.
