Josh Moore remains in critical care at Aintree University Hospital but his recovery from a chest infection had "further stabilised" on Monday to the extent that he can now be considered for back surgery.

The rider broke his femur and suffered broken ribs, a punctured lung and damage to his back when falling from Gleno at the sixth fence in a veterans' chase at Haydock on April 16.

Moore was placed in critical care last Wednesday after complications from a chest infection resulting from a rare reaction while under sedation before the operation on his femur.

Moore, the son of trainer Gary Moore and brother to fellow jockeys Ryan and Jamie, is now in a position to be considered for surgery on his back at the Walton Centre, which is close to the Aintree University Hospital where he remains sedated on a ventilator.

The Injured Jockeys Fund provided an update on Moore on Monday, which read: "Josh’s condition has further stabilised today and whilst still sedated on a ventilator in critical care at Aintree Hospital, he can now be considered for surgery on his back at the nearby Walton Centre.

"The Moore family are very grateful for the support and good wishes they have received from the industry at this difficult time."

In October the 30-year-old underwent major spinal surgery in a six-hour operation to insert metal rods and screws into his back following a fall at Plumpton, with that particular procedure delayed for six consecutive days due to other medical emergencies during the Covid crisis.
