Joe Fanning set to return on Wednesday after five weeks out

Joe Fanning, a key part of Mark Johnston's team, is looking forward to returning to action on Wednesday after being sidelined for five weeks.

The jockey, who is approaching 2,500 career winners and is in the top 20 most successful British Flat riders of all time, has been out of action since breaking his collarbone in a fall at Ripon on June 5.

He missed Royal Ascot, where he has ridden eight winners for Johnston, but will be back in good time for Glorious Goodwood, where his 18 victories make him the fourth most successful jockey currently riding in Britain.

"On Friday night I went to the Nuffield at York and they were happy for me to kick on," Fanning, 48, said on Sunday. "I'm back riding out on Monday and Tuesday, and I'm riding at Catterick on Wednesday."

Fanning, who has ridden a century of winners in each of the last ten seasons, had been in good form at the time of his fall and was on 73 victories for 2019.

"It was frustrating and a bad time for it to happen with so much racing on but that's the way it goes," he reflected. "I was flying at the time and it was an unlucky thing.

"But it could have been worse. Mark will have plenty of runners now so there will be plenty of nice horses to look forward to."
