'Joe couldn't have been nicer' - Cauthen pays tribute to fellow legend Mercer

Steve Cauthen paid a fond tribute to the late Joe Mercer from the other side of the Atlantic on Tuesday when he hailed the legendary rider for helping him settle in and acclimatise not only to the sport in Britain, but everyday life.

A much-loved figure, Mercer was champion jockey in 1979 and rode the mighty Brigadier Gerard in all his races. He won eight British Classics during a career that spanned 36 years and 2,810 victories.
