Jockeys warned about person making a spate of abusive phone calls
The BHA has warned jockeys to be on alert after it received a number of abusive and threatening phone calls from someone with a Scottish accent.
The regulator said numerous calls have come into both its own switchboard and to racecourses, all believed to be from the same person over the last few months.
It has asked jockeys to report any similar incidents so that the information can be passed on to police. The warning appeared in the latest edition of the Professional Jockeys Association newsletter.
It read: "The BHA wishes to alert PJA members to some very abusive and threatening calls from a person with a very broad Scottish accent.
"Over the last few months racecourses and the BHA switchboard have received many calls from this person, calls which are always very abusive and often quite threatening. The caller usually, but not always, hides his number.
"The BHA became aware last week that a licensed individual received a similar call they believe was from the same person and would like to know if jockeys get any such calls so that they can be logged and the details passed on to the police.
"If such calls are received then it would also be useful to know whether the number is withheld or not and if the call has been recorded. If you do receive any such calls please contact the PJA office and/or the BHA integrity team at intel@britishhorseracing.com or on 020 7152 0169."
Earlier this year Kate Tracey, partner of rider Ciaran Gethings, wrote about the abuse jockeys receive on social media. Read her article here.
