Jockey's fund closes with big sum raised and more to come

The online fund page set up to support Freddy Tylicki closed on Wednesday night having raised more than £275,000.

With more than 4,000 individual donations in four days, the GoFundMe page established by At The Races presenter Matt Chapman for the jockey, who suffered life-changing injuries in a fall at Kempton ten days ago, was one of the most successful and fastest-growing campaigns of its type in Britain.

Along with promised cheques, Chapman anticipates the total raised being at least £330,000.

Tylicki's family are in the process of setting up a charitable trust for the money donated.

In the meantime those still wishing to make a contribution can do so via the Injured Jockeys Fund website, referencing the jockey when submitting the donation.

The German-born rider has received support on a global scale, particularly in the country of his birth, with Australian Bloodstock, who have horses trained by Andreas Wohler, announcing it will auction a 2017 nomination to top stallion Protectionist with all proceeds going to Tylicki's fund.

Next week's auction will be run by sales company BBAG, with bids made via bbag-sales.de, starting on Wednesday and finishing on Friday, for the 2014 Melbourne Cup winner, whose stud fee is €6,500.

Further international backing came with the pledge of a €20,000 donation from the Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan Arabian Horse Racing Festival.

News of the gesture was revealed at a press conference in Abu Dhabi, where festival executive director Lara Sawaya referred to Tylicki's successful spell in the UAE last season, when he rode ten winners, and said: "It was the directive of Sheikh Mansoor to see what we could do to help Freddy. We wish him all the best, and we want him to be strong."
