Jockey Shane Quinlan hit with 16-day ban under non-trier rule at Bangor

Jockey Shane Quinlan was suspended for 16 days under the non-trier rule after 50-1 shot Lyrical Ballad finished fourth under apparent tender handling at Bangor on Wednesday.

The ban was issued following a stewards' inquiry into Quinlan's ride on the Neil Mulholland-trained four-year-old, who missed out on third place by three-quarters of a length in the second division of the 2m½f novice hurdle, which was won decisively by Blakeney Point.

Quinlan, a claiming professional with a 5lb allowance, was found guilty of "failing to ride his mount in such a way that he could be seen to ask for timely, real and substantial effort in the home straight to obtain the best possible placing".

The Racing Post in-running comment for Lyrical Ballad read "took keen hold, held up in midfield, nudged along from three out, still plenty to do two out, reminder before last, kept on run-in, never near to challenge, eyecatcher".

Quinlan, whose ban runs from August 15 to August 30, and Mulholland's representative were interviewed after the race, with the jockey stating his instructions had been to gain cover and settle Lyrical Ballad, who was making her second start over hurdles, in mid to rear of the field.

He added although the filly had failed to settle, she travelled and jumped well throughout and after the second-last hurdle, he maintained his mount had only stayed on one-paced to the line, passing beaten horses to, in his opinion, achieve the best possible placing.

The trainer's representative confirmed the instructions, but expressed some reservations regarding how the horse was ridden after the second-last.

It was not the only hefty jockey ban handed out at Bangor as conditional Charlie Todd was hit with an eight-day suspension for his ride on 5-2 favourite Ahead Of The Curve, who finished a tailed-off last of nine in the 2m7f handicap hurdle.

The veterinary officer stated that a post-race examination of the gelding had found it to have an irregular heartbeat and was also showing signs of heat stress.

The stewards suspended Todd for continuing on a horse that had been tailed off, apparently through fatigue. The ban runs from August 15 to August 22.
