Edgar Lebaisse experienced a novel – if very unwelcome – way to get disqualified after passing the post first at Cholet in north-west France on Sunday.

The circumstances were so unusual, in fact, that local officials subsequently took the unusual step of issuing a statement apologising for the need to demote the Francois Nicolle-trained six-year-old All The Law, who punters had sent off the 9-10 pari-mutuel favourite in a conditions hurdle.

After coming home six lengths clear of his nearest rival, Lebaisse was intercepted on his way back to the scales for the presentation of a bottle of wine and made to pose for a photo.
