Jedd O'Keeffe left red-faced after bringing wrong horse to Lingfield

Trainer Jedd O'Keeffe was left red-faced when Aegeus, a leading fancy for the 1m2f handicap at Lingfield on Monday, was declared a non-runner after the wrong horse arrived at the Surrey track.

As is standard practice the horse who arrived at the course was scanned by officials, at which point it was discovered that another horse from the same stable rather than 5-1 shot Aegeus had made the 280-mile journey from O'Keeffe's yard in North Yorkshire.

"We bought the owners a number of horses at the horses in training sales," O'Keeffe explained. "Two came back together and they've been mixed up ever since. It's completely and utterly my fault and my fault alone that I didn't check.

"I'm embarrassed to say that we do have our own scanner and it's just slipped through the net and something I forgot to do. It hasn't happened before and I can guarantee it won't happen again."

O'Keeffe, who confirmed stable star Sam Spinner is an intended runner in a Grade 2 novice chase over 3m at Doncaster on Saturday, added: "The horse got scanned this morning and they said this is not the horse who has been declared to race, at which point my cheeks reddened an awful lot.

"We've scanned every single horse on the yard since we found out just to make sure I haven't made another stupid error."
