A single aberration may have caused Cue Card's connections to miss out on a £1 million windfall, but one of jumping's most cherished performers is being primed to seek seven-figure compensation with rider Paddy Brennan adamant his superstar ally should be every bit as good this season.

Paul Nicholls, Willie Mullins and Nigel Twiston-Davies were yesterday among those welcoming the decision of Jockey Club Racecourses to again guarantee an insured £1m payout should a single horse sweep the Betfair Chase, 32Red King George VI Chase and Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup.

But for an uncharacteristic error at the Gold Cup's third-last fence, that Jockey Club Chase Triple Crown payout could well have been banked by Cue Card's owner Jean Bishop, Colin Tizzard, the trainer's stable staff and Brennan.
