James Tate on the rise with over 100 horses in training for 2020

Success is breeding success for James Tate, who is expanding his operation after enjoying his best ever season in 2019.

The Newmarket trainer has completed the purchase of the now retired Alan Bailey's Cavendish Stables, on the other side of the Hamilton Road from his own Jamesfield Place yard.

Tate, who has been training for just over eight years, had 74 winners last season and is expected to have over 100 horses in his care for the first time in 2020.

Bailey, who had been Newmarket's oldest trainer, saddled his last runner when Clem A won at Wolverhampton on January 6.

Tate, whose father Tom trains in North Yorkshire and whose uncle is legendary trainer Michael Dickinson, was last week handed the keys to a property which was initially on the market with a pricetag of £895,000.

He said: "As a result of our best-ever season last year, we have a few more horses this time and it made sense to keep them close by rather than farming them out all over the place to pre-training yards as we have in the past.

"Alan has saddled his last runner and I think most of his team have gone to his grandson Joe Parr, who is shortly to get his licence out, I believe.

"Cavendish could not be better sited for us and we are tidying the place up at the moment. It's an ideal overflow yard and also has a horsewalker and bungalow."

Tate won the Duke of York Stakes and Chipchase Stakes with Invincible Army last year and also took the Princess Margaret Stakes and £150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes with 6,000gns buy Under The Stars.

Reflecting on 2019, Tate said: "Last year was a very good year for us with our top tally of 74 winners which included one Group 2 success, three at Group 3 level and four Listed.

"Hopefully we can better that in 2020 especially as we have had increased support from Rabbah Bloodstock as a result."
