'I've tried to do this for a while' - Daryl Jacob achieves ambition at Cartmel
Daryl Jacob wanted to win rather than buy a sticky toffee pudding, and success at Cartmel – the home of the sweet treat – not only earned him a bite of the dessert but more significantly meant he has ridden a winner at every jumps track in Britain.
The full set of winners has been high on Jacob's agenda since success at Catterick in January last year meant a victory at the Cumbrian venue was the only thing eluding him.
It took him 16 attempts to break his Cartmel duck but 11-4 chance Redwood Queen ran down Simply Red in the closing stages to strike by a neck in a 2m1f handicap hurdle.
Winning connections at Cartmel receive a tray of sticky toffee pudding made from the village's shop, famous across the world and branded as the home of the pudding, and Jacob was delighted to take one home.
He said: "I always said I'm never going to buy one, I'm going to win one. Now I've done it and I won't mind buying one in the future.
"It's something I've tried to achieve for a while. I needed Catterick and I won with a spare ride about a year and a half ago. I don't tend to go up to those tracks very often but since I got that winner over the line it was something I wanted to try achieve."
Saturday's victory marked another notable moment in an outstanding career which has spanned almost 20 years and includes Grand National success in 2012 with Neptune Collonges.
Jacob had to rely on Irish trainer Noel Kelly to complete the milestone. He was riding his first winner for the trainer but fancied his chances having partnered Redwood Queen to a promising second at the track the time before.
He said: "I rode her last time and she was second so I thought she'd have a chance. I was looking forward to riding her.
"It wasn't the easiest thing to do as I haven't got that many contacts involved in summer jumping. It was always going to be a little bit difficult.
"Fair play to Noel Kelly, I met him at Hexham one day and he said, 'I'll supply you with a winner one day', and he was true to his word. He made it happen for me."
