'It's worth more than a lot of Group 1s' - York aiming for race upgrade

York is putting its money where its mouth is next month in an expensive attempt to secure a fourth Group 1 race at the Ebor meeting.

It hopes making the Group 2 Sky Bet City of York Stakes a £400,000 race, compared to £213,000 last year, will earn it the support to win a long sought after upgrade.

Top-level winners Alcohol Free and Perfect Power are among the entries for the August 20 contest, which has been battling for the status as Britain's top non-juvenile 7f race with the Lennox at Goodwood, Hungerford at Newbury and Park Stakes at Doncaster.
