'It's maybe 2,000 miles' - Mulrennan en route to Goodwood after trek of Britain
Glorious Goodwood enters its and the atmosphere in the owner and trainers' car park after racing on Friday confirmed the meeting is a far more relaxed – "less stuffy" according to Stan Moore's wife Sara – affair than Royal Ascot.
However, one man who has not relaxed is Paul Mulrennan, a senior member of the weighing room who has tasted top-flight glory, but might have been picking at service station grub this week.
That is because the workaholic has embarked on a schedule that might make a long-distance lorry driver wince – and it is not over yet.
The Yorkshire-based rider, whose wife Adele is a presenter on ITV Racing, rode at Ayr on Monday before shooting down to Goodwood for one ride a day later.
He was at Redcar on Wednesday, back at Goodwood on Thursday and then spent Friday at Musselburgh.
Travelling down to Sussex in his Mercedes on Saturday morning, the 40-year-old, in action at Chester on Sunday, had the company of fellow jockey Connor Beasley and said: "It's part of the job, isn't it? If you've got rides down there you've got to drive down – you've just got to do it.
"I haven't sat down and worked out how many miles it is, but it might be something like 2,000 miles.
"I've done all the driving myself – I don't have a driver. It's part of the job and stable staff do plenty of driving. They're in a horse box and at least I'm in a car.
"And I've company today as Connor is with me, which helps, and I brought Adele down with me on Thursday as she's been working there.
"The way I look at this week is it would be worse if I wasn't doing it. I'd be moaning if I wasn't down there having rides. I've been getting plenty of rides this season and like being busy, so you just keep going."
Landing the on Makanah would help with Mulrennan's fuel bill, but he might get more of a kick by seeing Euchen Glen return to form in the .
Eight of the popular gelding's 12 wins have come with Mulrennan in the saddle, but Jim Goldie's inmate has not fired on his two most recent outings.
"He's rated a stone lighter than he was this time last year, so he's back in a handicap and hopefully he'll outrun his odds," he said.
"He was second at this meeting last year in a Group race and maybe his last run was a bit of a blip. It was an apprentice race around Chester and things didn't go to plan."
As for some downtime, Mulrennan, who won a brace of Nunthorpe Stakes on Mecca's Angel, said: "I'm at Ayr on Monday, but I'm going to take Tuesday off.
"It's only Catterick and there wasn't much there for me, so I'll take Tuesday off because I'll be busy after that with Newcastle on Wednesday and then I think I'll have three days in Scotland on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and then Haydock is next Sunday.
"I'd 100 per cent want it this way and you have to make hay when the sun shines; we have enough time off and free days in the winter. Adele is working on Tuesday and my daughter Scarlett is off school, so I'll just do something with her."
