Charlie Appleby admitted he is getting an "edge" over his training rivals, especially in preparing for the big autumn two-year-old races, thanks to access to Godolphin's turf gallops.

Parched grass gallops have been shut in major training centres such as Newmarket and Lambourn where droughts have been declared after one of the driest summers on record.

But Appleby, based at Godolphin's Moulton Paddocks in Newmarket, has had the advantage of being able to mix training on private turf and all-weather gallops as his rivals are constrained by the long dry spell.
