'It's a big achievement and she's improved no end' – Hayley Turner on Gordon

Hayley Turner is Josephine Gordon’s only predecessor when it comes to female jockeys who have ridden 100 winners in a calendar year in Britain, and here she pays tribute to the second member of a very exclusive club . . .

It’s really hard to ride 100 winners in a year and takes a lot of dedication – and it's not just working for the year; it's all the work she's put in in the previous years to get the opportunities.

George Baker got to 100 winners for the year a couple of weeks before I did and he got the star performance in the Racing Post, so when I did it at Wolverhampton two weeks later on the second-last day of the year I thought I might get the same, but it turned out to be something massive.

I couldn't believe the amount of publicity from outside racing as well. It really surprised me, but Josephine's taken it to a new level now because she's done it before even December has kicked in and it's her first year out of her claim – she was an apprentice only last year.

It's a big achievement and she's improved no end. I hope I've opened doors for girls coming through, and now Josephine's doing it. I'm really pleased for her.
