Josh Moore, the popular jump jockey who was seriously ill in hospital after a fall at Haydock in April, returned home last week – much to the delight of his family.

The Grade 1-winning rider broke his femur and suffered other serious injuries when Gleno – a gelding trained by his father Gary – fell in a handicap chase, but his recovery was compromised by complications stemming from that.

However, more positive news about his condition emerged recently and those closest to him are understandably thrilled by his return home.

His mother Jayne said on Monday afternoon: "He's doing well, really well, but needs a few months of rest and recuperation.

"He came home on Friday evening and is back with his family – his partner Phoebe [Cruse] and their son Freddie – and, in time, he'll make a full recovery."

Moore's eldest brother Ryan was in fine form at Deauville on Sunday when he rode a treble including the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat on Tenebrism, but the family had reason to smile before that.

"It was lovely to see Josh walk into the yard on Saturday morning," Jayne Moore added. "It meant so much to us as a family and all the staff who were there, while some of our owners were as well.

"They've all missed him and it's just nice to get Josh back."

A much-loved member of the weighing room, Moore enjoyed his most prolific season in 2020-21 when he partnered 40 winners, while the biggest victories on his CV include the 2015 Betfair Hurdle on Violet Dancer and the same year's Henry VIII Novices' Chase on Ar Mad.

They were saddled by his father from the outfit's West Sussex base, of which Moore is a key part.

He had initially been at Aintree University Hospital, but was transferred closer to home, to a hospital in Haywards Heath, before another stint at the Wellington Hospital in north London.

A spell at Oaksey House in Lambourn – the rehabilitation centre for jockeys – is also set to form part of his recuperation.
