A stellar career that had its origins almost 26 years to the day came to a formal conclusion on Tuesday when Paul Carberry accepted medical advice not to return to race-riding.

The dual Irish champion jockey broke his left femur in a fall from the Noel Meade-trained Rich Coast at the Listowel harvest festival last September, and suffered further complications when he cracked the steel reinforcements when he took another fall at his home in January.

“It didn’t go great,” Carberry revealed of his consultation with Dr Paddy Kenny at Connolly Memorial Hospital in Dublin yesterday.
