Richard Forristal pays tribute to a rare riding talent

In Paul Carberry’s departure from the cut and thrust of race-riding, the often insular world of racing loses a rare talent that helped bridge the yawning divide to the broader sporting spectrum.

As a jockey he possessed a gift that transcended the confines of our game, an indecipherable genius of unquantifiable proportions that resonated with and engaged otherwise disinterested spectators in the same way that George Best, Alex Higgins or Paul Gascoigne had done in previous generations.

A number of years ago, with a little incentive from JP McManus, Carberry elected to abandon the demon drink, a departure that should ensure he does not embark on the destructive path associated with such deified figures.
