Way To Paris wins first Group 1 aged seven in Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud
Veterans Judicial, Caspian Prince and Limato were the headline acts on Saturday and evergreen seven-year-old Way To Paris continued a rampant run of form to win his first Group 1 aged seven in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.
The grey was patiently ridden by Pierre-Charles Boudot but was pulled out in the straight and delivered to strike on the line as the 6-5 favourite, winning by a neck ahead of Nagano Gold with Ziyad in third.
Old Persian, running for the first time since beating only one horse home in the Breeders' Cup Turf in November, was prominent early on but faded to be last of the five runners.
Second in the Prix d'Harcourt on seasonal reappearance, Way To Paris ran out an impressive winner in the Grand Prix de Chantilly before going down by just a head to last year's Prix du Jockey Club hero Sottsass in the Group 1 Prix Ganay on his last start.
Still an entire, Way To Paris is still eligible to run in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and Paddy Power gave him a quote of 40-1 for the Longchamp showpiece.
While Arc winners Montjeu, Treve and Waldgiest all scored in the Saint-Cloud Group 1, none of them managed to win it en route to Longchamp success that season.
Helissio was the last horse to complete the feat when winning the first of his two Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud wins in 1996.
