Veteran jockey dies aged 67 following racecourse fall in Arizona
A veteran jockey who rode in more than 4,600 races has died at the age of 67 after falling from his mount at Tucson's Rillito Park racecourse on Sunday.
Richard Gamez was unseated during the fifth race of the meeting when Drama Is Overrated stumbled into the turn, causing the rider to fall.
Gamez was transferred to the Banner University Medical Centre in Phoenix but later died as a result of his injuries.
He rode 643 winners in a career that dated back to 1976 and earned just over $1.2m (£940,000/€1.08m) in prize-money.
The Arizona Department of Gaming's racing division is investigating the accident. A spokeswoman told the Arizona Daily Star: "We offer our deepest condolences and prayers to his family, friends and the entire racing community."
