Turner, Bell and O'Brien compete for female world crown in Sweden
While Hayley Turner was warming up for Tuesday's Lady Jockeys’ Thoroughbred World Championship at Bro Park, Stockholm with a winner at Windsor on Monday night, top female riders Sammy Jo Bell and Ana O'Brien were also looking forward to the inaugural event.
Turner, who rode Flying Sparkle to victory in the first race at Windsor on Monday, made a fleeting return to the saddle in order to prepare for the challenge of taking on some of the top women jockeys from around the world in Sweden.
Turner headlines an all-star cast at Bro Park, with big names from Europe, Asia and Australasia taking part in the event, which will be shown live on Racing UK.
Bell, who won the Silver Saddle at the 2015 Shergar Cup, will join Turner and O'Brien in the competition organised by Svensk Galopp in association with Abba member Benny Andersson’s Chess Racing.
Bell said: "It's something different and a great opportunity to ride in another country – I've never ridden there before. There's a girl competing from several different parts of the world, and there aren't many chances to be world champion at anything."
The championship will be decided on the most points gained in five nine-runner races, in which the rides have been allocated by a panel of experts to ensure every jockey has an equal chance of victory.
The other riders are Maryline Eon from France, Kei Chiong from Hong Kong, New Zealand’s leading female jockey Danielle Johnson, plus Stefanie Hofer (Germany), Fanny Olsson (Sweden) and Sara Slot (Denmark).
Lady Jockeys’ Thoroughbred World Championship
Paddy Power: 4 Maryline Eon, Stefanie Hofer, Ana O’Brien, 9-2 Kei Chiong, 9 Sammy Jo Bell, Danielle Johnson, Fanny Olsen, Hayley Turner, 12 Sara Slot.
