Trainer banned after fleeing security with suspect package at Delaware Park
Controversial trainer Marcus Vitali has been banned for a year and fined $2,500 for "interfering with and impeding an investigation" after running away from investigators with an unidentified object during a security search.
Vitali, who was charged with medical violations in 2016, is alleged to have removed a package covered in bubble wrap from the dorm room fridge of one of his employees at Delaware Park during a routine search on an unrelated matter, before scarpering from officials.
The item was not recovered, although Vitali claimed it was "two joints of marijuana" at a stewards' hearing.
Veterinarian Dr Don Johnson testified the trainer had attempted to give him a vial of "reddish-brown liquid" to administer to one of his runners at an earlier fixture.
John Wayne, executive director of the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission, said: "Marcus pushed his way through security, withdrew a package that was bubble-wrapped, and ran off.
"I stand on principle that I'm not going to allow him to continue to operate like this. This guy is a breach of integrity."
Vitali, who has confirmed his attention to appeal the ruling, will remain suspended until the commission hears his appeal, which is scheduled for August 21.
