Study Of Man faces Greffulhe test ahead of Epsom and Chantilly options
1.35 Saint-Cloud
Prix Greffulhe (Group 2) | 3yo | colts & geldings | 1m2½f
Saxon Warrior made all the waves in the ante-post market for the Investec Derby over the weekend following his Qipco 2,000 Guineas triumph, but he is not the only son of Japanese super-sire Deep Impact being aimed at the middle-distance Classics at the beginning of June.
The Pascal Bary-trained Study Of Man holds entries at Epsom and in the Qipco Prix du Jockey Club and looks to take the next step along one of those two roads on Tuesday against three rivals, in a race that has produced winners of both Derbys in recent years. Pour Moi won the Greffulhe on the way to Epsom glory in 2011, while Saonois was fourth in the Greffulhe in 2012 before winning the Prix du Jockey Club next up. No horse has won the Greffulhe and Jockey Club since Dalakhani in 2003.
Study Of Man made a big impression around this track on his only start at two and was far from disgraced when running on well to claim second behind the Martyn Meade-trained Chilean over a mile and a furlong at Longchamp in April.
"He has done very well since the Prix La Force and we think he gained a lot from the experience, since he had only had one race before that," said Alan Cooper, racing manager to the Niarchos Family.
"We had the choice of the Prix de Guiche [Monday at Chantilly over 1m1f] and this race and we wanted to find out more about his ideal trip.
"We want to see if we're good enough to go towards the Jockey Club or the Derby. We know he gets 1,800 metres [1m1f] but we wanted to see a bit more."
Study Of Man not only represents star quality on his paternal side, but counts the mighty Miesque as his grand dam.
Alhadab split Pharrell and the Aidan O'Brien-trained Flag Of Honour in a tight finish to the Group 3 Prix Noailles, a race which, in common with Study Of Man's comeback run, was run on much more testing ground than the son of Camelot will encounter here.
Alounak is trained in Germany by Frenchman Jean-Pierre Carvalho and warmed up for this task with a six-length Listed win at Dusseldorf, a performance which earned the colt promotion to second favouritism for the Deutches Derby.
The Antonio Marcialis-trained Assiro completes the quartet.
