Shepherd Market shows fighting spirit to gain Listed success for Cox

Connections feared the weather gods would not smile again for Shepherd Market but, despite a going description faster than ideal and relentless autumn sunshine, the Clive Cox-trained filly ran all the way to the line to win the Listed Prix Coronation.

Jockey Tony Piccone waited in front with the daughter of Cox's former stable star Reckless Abandon and asked for maximum effort only at the two-furlong pole.

Maxime Guyon and Savannah bore down throughout the final furlong, but Shepherd Market always looked like maintaining the upper hand and was still a head to the good on the line.

"Last year all her best form was on soft ground and this year the summer has been very dry in England," said Cox. "We've been hoping we could win at least a Listed race with her.

"The ground was safe for her today, she's loved the track and it's really nice to bring a filly here by Reckless Abandon [who won the Papin and Morny in France] and for her to do this. Tony Piccone gave her a superb ride."

Co-owner Fiona Marner confirmed that Shepherd Market would stay in training at four and there might be more to come this campaign.

"She's in good form and would appreciate a bit more ease still, so hopefully there will be another step to come," said Marner. "We'll discuss it, but an entry back here in the Prix Perth might not be a silly idea."
