Racing minister hopes news of industry bailout reaches Buckingham Palace
Leading New Zealand racing figures have welcomed the government’s decision to grant a rescue package to its ailing industry, saying the bailout provides a secure platform on which to rebuild in the wake of “years of bad administration” and the crippling impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Racing minister Winston Peters, also the nation’s deputy prime minister, announced a NZD$72.5 million (£35.8m/€40.8m) support package which will be included in the Ardern government’s budget handed down by finance minister Grant Robertson on Thursday.
Racing in neighbouring Australia received the royal seal of approval earlier this month when the Queen told Australian prime minister Scott Morrison she was pleased to see racing continuing, and New Zealand officials hope their good news may reach Her Majesty.
