Protectionist cut for Flemington repeat after classy display

Protectionist was cut to 20-1 (from 40) for the Emirates Melbourne Cup by Sky Bet on Sunday after an easy win in Hamburg's Grosser Hansa-Preis – a race he landed in 2014 en route to victory in Australia's biggest race.

After an easy win in a minor event at Dusseldorf four weeks ago, he met much better opposition in that €70,000 Group 2 over 1m4f but dealt with them as if they were second-raters.
