Preening leaves it late but delivers Listed win for Fanshawe at Deauville
Preening left it late in the year but finally gained winning black type for owners and breeders Cheveley Park Stud with success in the Listed Prix Miss Satamixa at Deauville on Sunday.
The four-year-old daughter of Dutch Art, a winner at two and three, had finished second in the Group 3 Sceptre Stakes at Doncaster in September before disappointing in the Fleur de Lys, another Listed race, at Lingfield last time.
Winning trainer James Fanshawe said: "She thoroughly deserved that as she had been unlucky not to win one before this year.
"She had a pretty awful draw but she really stuck it out well and it’s great to get her big black type.
"She’s an improving filly, quite lightly raced and I‘d love to have her in training next year as there are lots of races for fillies like her, but that is still to be discussed with Mr and Mrs Thompson and Chris Richardson."
Preening, landing a near £23,500 payday, was forced to race wide from her draw but closed strongly in the straight to reverse recent placings with fellow Newmarket-trained filly California Love, who had finished a neck in front of her at Lingfield but was three-quarters of a length adrift in the this 7½f contest.

California Love's trainer Richard Spencer said: "She has got her black type, which is great. She was just a 6,000 guineas foal and will be kept in training next year, so will probably have a break now."
The Joseph O’Brien-trained Crotchet, who was supplemented, finished third with Hugo Palmer’s Heavenly Holly ninth, but beaten just two and a half lengths, and Andrew Balding’s Dutch Treat 14th of the 15 runners.
