David Jennings visits Werribee to meet the Melbourne Cup-winning trainer
It is the morning after the night before and mornings after the night before are always more manageable when drink has been declined. Joseph O'Brien has learnt a lot from his father and avoiding alcohol is another precedent which has been passed down a generation.
We are in Werribee for the traditional media conference with the Melbourne Cup winners and the newest and youngest one is looking very fresh for someone who was celebrating in the Crown into the small hours at a Lloyd Williams after party. No champagne, no cocktails, but most importantly of all, no crying about how horrendous his hangover is.
"Poor Rekindling didn't get fed this morning," jokes Joseph while glancing at his right-hand men MJ Doran and Mark Power, neither of whom appear to have followed their boss's example. Don't mind him, lads, you deserved every drop.
