Newman thrilled to be back among the winners at Ascot

It may have been Ascot in Western Australia rather than Ascot in Berkshire but Lee Newman was still delighted to ride the first winner of his latest comeback.

The former champion apprentice got up close home to land the last race on Wednesday's card on Invincible Mode for Martin Allan, the brother of British jockey David Allan.

"My judgment is still there!" said Newman. "He's a very difficult horse to train and ride but Martin reached out to me last week to come gallop him with a view to riding him today.

"I got on well with him and it paid off," added the 35-year-old, who was riding his first winner since 2011.

Newman won the apprentices' title when with Richard Hannon snr in 2000 and after giving up due to weight problems two years later he returned for another successful stint in the saddle in 2010, only to give up his battle with the scales the next year.

He has been riding work in Western Australia for a while and the man nicknamed 'The Flying Scotsman' by a local commentator returned to race-riding last week.

"I have to say a big thank you to everyone who has offered me so much support - and I hope this is the first of many," said Newman.
