New Agenda scores in the snow for Webber at St Moritz
New Agenda added victory on the snow to three hurdle wins and an all-weather triumph as he landed the Grosser Preis Longines conditions stakes at St Moritz on Sunday for Oxfordshire trainer Paul Webber.
The seven-year-old, owned by the New Agenda Syndicate, made all on his first start on the surface under German jockey Dennis Schiergen, holding off the late challenge of Fiesta to score by a neck.
Fellow British runner Berrarhi, trained by John Best, finished a distant third, while jockey Kieran O’Neill finished a further distance back in fourth aboard favourite Nimrod, last year’s winner of the course’s feature Grosser Preis von St Moritz. In total more than 130 lengths separated first to last in this seven-runner, one mile one furlong contest.
New Agenda and Berrarhi are entered to run at the track’s meeting next Sunday, and are due to contest the main race of the year at St Moritz the following weekend.
Best said on Sunday: “There was half a metre of snow overnight Friday into yesterday and the track was riding very deep. Berrahri couldn't get to the front early, as he likes to, and New Agenda led and held off Fiesta, with Berrahri in third.
"New Agenda is almost certain to go off favourite for the Grosser Preis in two weeks after that performance."
Devon trainer Nick Williams saddled a second at Pau on Sunday as Le Rocher responded willingly to pressure under Alain de Chitray to finish six lengths behind winning favourite Forthing in the Listed Grande Course de Haies de Pau.
